remember the "Weathermen" from the 60s.

Vietnam days all over again, and for the same reasons - gov't out of control.

Eventually, the same results, and investigations will follow, like the night follows day:

Documents from the FBI's Secret Wars Against Dissent in the United States

icdc.com

This describes provacateurs promoting actions to get gov't counter-attacks. In that case, and this, the counter-attacks resulted in suppressing dissent, since that dissent was falsely associated with violence.

The news items you mention are the first step. Here's the next step, the statement we can expect from Ashcroft, changing "SDS" to "terrorists":

"If [SDS] or any group was organized on a national basis to subvert our society, then I think Congress should pass laws to suppress that activity. When you see an epidemic like this cropping up all over the country - the same kind of people saying the same kinds of things - you begin to get the picture that it is a national subversive activity ... [SDS and other new left activists] should be rounded up and put in a detention camp.
