Well being from Illinois I certainly understand your support for Carol, however, I think both Al and Carol will have a hard time appealing to the majority of the democratic base, which is still White and Male.

Carol actually won her Senate seat her because it was the "Year of the Woman." There was so much sentiment against men that a woman running for the Senate was easily elected. I believe Carol got a plurality of the female vote in Illinois that year, and enough men to win.

Carol did not, however, win re-election because she did not perform her job well enough and because of supposed "scandal". It is interesting how "white folks" can quickly accuse a Black person (Carol) of scandal, who is running for office, however when it comes to a white person (George Ryan) it gets ignored until he is IN OFFICE.
