When you elect a rep from your riding to go to the Big City as your member of parliament, fptp is the only practical way to do it .... to go to prop-rep, you have to set up constituencies that are not defined by geography, these will be kind of nebulous abstract concepts to those who have long associated their MP with their immediate area ... in a country of distinct regions like this g.w.n., prop-rep might be a little harder sell than elsewhere, maybe .... dunno, haven't thought about it much, Sofa had thoughts on it upthread, the points he made seemed to make sense at the time

Party discipline can do damage too, when it is excessive or used out of place .... you have to have parties of some sort or you'd have chaos, but it would be nice to see a tradition of gentlemanly bipartisanship develop, it has in the past, other nations have varying degrees of it at times, the US has had quite a lot, at some times on some issues

KC, Ilmar is not dyslexic no, he always starts what he finnishes .... just watch out he doesn't finnish up with the nuntii latini, toooo many vowels for your tender canuck ears - yleradio1.fi .... i haven't heard YLE for months now, they used to have it on CBC radio late-night, maybe still do, don't know, caught a bit of Deutsche Welle last night .... avid CBC listener here, they piss me off in some ways but i'm not ready to junk them yet
