It would make a great deal of difference...

Since you don't trust anybody, what difference would it make?

You see, no one has done an investigation.

It isn't sufficient to dismiss investigations and audits by saying, "gosh, you wouldn't believe it anyway, so let's not do it"

I'd love to hear that from a bank controller to a bank examiner !
Yet, we accept such claptrap from WH officials, or basically anyone who wants to avoid scrutiny on amounts many orders of magnitude greater than a bank.

Even up to the point of Rumsfeld saying a bit of cash was unaccounted for in the accounting in DOD, $2.3 Trillion. That's $20,000 for every household in the country. No big deal, I guess. No demand for investigation made by any of the jellyfish Congressfolk. Why bother? They can get away without accountability, protected by the executive branch, and vice-versa, with excuses like the one you list.
