Dean is not centrist. He has a few smaller issues that are centrist but all the big ones are to the left of the field. He has however switched eight positions lately, I guess trying to move to the center or correct wrong stances.

Many of Dean's key supporters are the most leftwing in the party. That is his base. It's a fiery base but it's not a base you can beat Bush with. Again, shades of McGovern with his anti-war core supporters vs. the establishment. Good grass roots organization but poison in the general election.
