Toomey Snubs Seniors and Pennsylvania Republicans

75th time Toomey casts lone vote in House GOP Delegation

Harrisburg -- Over the weekend Republican Congressman Pat Toomey deserted Pennsylvania seniors and his GOP House colleagues by voting against President Bush's landmark Medicare bill.

This vote marked the 75th time in less than five years that Toomey had defied President Bush and his Pennsylvania Republican colleagues by voting against them on key matters. In addition to being the only Pennsylvania Republican House member to vote against the Medicare bill, Toomey also sided with the state's entire Democrat House caucus.

The Medicare Prescription Drug Bill will provide a prescription drug benefit to millions of Pennsylvania seniors, and also increase reimbursements to rural health care organizations. Pennsylvania has one of the country's largest rural populations.

"It's clear that Pat Toomey isn't far right, he's far out," said Christopher Nicholas, campaign manager for Senator Arlen Specter.

Here are other key votes where Toomey deserted Pennsylvania and his fellow GOP House members:

Toomey was the only member of the state's Republican Congressional delegation to oppose the Fathers Count Act of 1999, designed to provide grants for projects to promote responsible fatherhood. (11/10/99, #586)

Toomey was the only member of the state's Republican Congressional delegation to oppose a bill to provide assistance for poison prevention and to stabilize funding of regional poison control enters. Toomey was one of just 16 Republicans to vote against this bill. (02/08/00, #9)

Toomey was the only member of the state's Republican Congressional delegation to oppose an amendment that would have allowed military personnel to assist the border patrol and US Customs Service in drug interdiction and counter-terrorism activities along US borders. Only 31 Republicans voted against this amendment. (05/18/00, #197)

Toomey was the only member of the state's Republican Congressional delegation to oppose the Veterans and HUD Appropriations bill. Only 15 Republicans voted against this bill. (07/31/01, #297)

Toomey was the only member of the state's Republican Congressional delegation to oppose a bill to establish rapid response teams to investigate fatal and near fatal building collapses (like the Twin Towers). Only 22 Republicans voted against this bill. (07/12/02, #295)
"Congress now has the opportunity to modernize this important program to offer comprehensive coverage for pharmaceutical drugs and improve the delivery of health care," stated Senator Specter, who voted for the bill in the Senate. "This bill has the potential to make a dramatic difference for millions of Americans living with lower incomes and chronic health care needs. That is something that all Pennsylvania Republican members of the House of Representatives understand, except for Congressman Toomey."
