A few days ago I bought an 80-GB WD drive for $73 instead of the Maxtor drive for $68, or the STX drive on sale for $49.

$49 is a very aggressive price for an 80GB drive. Where was it offered? Do you have any actual evidence to suggest that STX may be of lower quality, or is it possible that STX may simply have lower costs? Or was it just a retail channel loss leader?
