Taiwan is an aberration of the Cold War. As Indonesia, South Africa and Israel are.

To a certain extent Cuba and North Korea are too. Such aberration where artificial. Slowly -since they have outlived their usefullness- the situation is changing to suit the new political-economic environment.

As you know the Cold War situation the world map was laid out as an strategic war plan. It needed a strong man here, Suharto's Indonesia (Malacca Straight, a bastion there, South Africa, (the oil route over Cape of Good Hope) a plug over there (Israel close to the oil producing countries) or a showcase in designated points. Berlin and Taiwan are case in point.

It is not necessary to have showcase Taiwan or plug Israel. In the case of Israel because its costs are not warranted by its benefits.

Those things are actually very simple to be explained.
