Hi IQBAL,

Re: If even half of what William Safire says today about Iraq/Al Qaeda links is true,

Safire is proving to be a resilient prevaricator as he ages. The Weekly Standard hysteria has been fairly convincingly rebutted by a number of sources. It sad to see a man who once actually cared about the truth to have lately been reduced to being nothing but a pathetic rumor-monger.

Here's a Safire column that will probably surprise you. In 1992, Safire actually understood that it was the duplicity of George Herbert Walker Bush that enabled Saddam Hussein to stay in power after the inconclusively fought Iran-Iraq War. The U.S. created the monster that the pundits like Safire now so slavishly progandize about for the forces inside our government that have created this profitable quagmire in Iraq.

Safire should be ashamed of himself.
