A Partial Victory Is Not Acceptable

Last week's carnage in Istanbul should serve as a lesson and warning that the U.S. should maintain an aggressive approach in fighting and dismantling al-Qaeda and other organizations of terror. The combined synagogue bombings with the twin bombings at the British Consulate and HSBC have left at least 55 people dead and 750 wounded, the worst week of terror in Turkey's recent history. The group responsible for these horrific attacks is the small militant Islamic Great Eastern Raiders' Front (known as IBDA-C). They have no direct link to the original al-Qaeda leaders but are part of an integrated network of terror cells funded from Iran. Their goal is to destroy any government opposing Islamic fundamentalism, proven by the timing of their attack after Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan's decision to back the U.S. troops in Iraq.

Not coincidentally, President Bush was making an historic trip to London, and he laid out the terms of his Iraqi policy in his speech during his visit there. Anti-war demonstrators were out in droves, but numbered only at about 70,000, a figure far lower than the original predictions. It's notable that the left-wing anti-war Guardian published a poll indicating that the "public opinion in Britain is overwhelmingly pro-American with 62% of voters believing that the U.S. is generally speaking a force for good, not evil, in the world." It's good to know that the British are catching on to the dangerous ideas espoused by their own media.

These vile attacks are an attempt to destabilize modern Turkey and to provide a warning to other moderate Muslim nations to steer clear of the U.S. and its allies for the following reasons:

*The continuous global conflict surrounding modern secular Islamic democracies vs. those seeking installation of fundamentalist Islamic theocracies (Iran).

*Innocent lives are viewed as expendable in the minds of fanatical Islamic terrorists who killed and maimed many more Turkish Muslims then either Jews or Westerners.

*A democratic Turkey is viewed as a major trading partner for Europe, as evidenced by attempts this year to gain entry to the European Union. This potential threat to fundamentalism and isolation can be viewed as a potential precursor to a new wave of attacks throughout Europe.

It was comforting to note that the majority of Turkish citizens continue to reject calls for an overthrow of the democratically elected Erdogan government. They expressed outrage and disgust at the latest senseless violence to mar their nation.

It has been suggested that this latest carnage can be blamed on the theological rulers in Iran. The homicide synagogue bombers had spent the last year in Iran training and perfecting their deadly art. Although the attack had all the earmarks of an Al-Qaeda suicide mission, Iran continues to be an equal opportunity supporter of anti-Western terror groups regardless of specific Islamic sect affiliation. It seems that the Spring 2003 Tehran student protests did little to quench the blood thistly imams in Iran.

During a July 2003 speech to Congress, Prime Minister Tony Blair stated that "Our ultimate weapon is not our guns but our beliefs." After last week's tragedy in Turkey, Mr. Blair reaffirmed that we must defeat terrorism utterly. He's right, and Americans must continue to support President Bush's foreign policy.

Since 9-11, terrorist attacks have been confined to Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Obviously, the Bush Doctrine, homeland security and Patriot Act are working effectively to safeguard the lives of Americans and our Allies. This is a major achievement that eludes Bush's detractors who berate his war policies while offering no viable alternative strategy. Since total annihilation of Western ideals is the terrorists' aim, a partial victory is not acceptable.

Democrats who criticize President Bush's Iraqi War efforts are undermining the American and Allied commitment to end the scourge of global terror.
Our condolences pour out to the Turkish victims and brave soldiers who died last week. The attacks overseas are being orchestrated to discourage our resolve, but our commitment to defeat our enemies must remain strong. If Tehran is behind this bloodshed, then immediate and punitive military action must begin.
