I think you have a vision of reforming kids through Universal Service. I have no desire to reform kids in the military...though it does sometimes happen. The military has firm policies in place to keep proven trouble-makers out. I do have a strong desire to give young Americans a personal stake in this concept called freedom. An overseas tour in a hostile environment does wonders for attitudes and instills a strong desire to participate in the process at home. And I don't mean conservative values...lots of fine demos have served America well. FL is one I often disagree with ideologically...yet we respect the differences and share the goal of keeping America free and safe. An overseas tour in a hostile environment provides an opportunity to witness others struggle to achieve freedom. It also allows one to witness first hand the work of monsters like saddam. These are an invaluable life lessons.
