Gehlen had the agents in place in Eastern Europe, and the decision was made to use him. Right or wrong, we were fighting the Soviet Empire, and I am damn glad they did. Exactly my point. The current regime is no doubt as thrilled to use Islamic terrorists today as you are that they used Nazis in fighting the last war. The secrecy makes it a self-defeating echo chamber of constant violence. It doesn't work to fight the last war. We're going to see various terrorist-led actions and counter-actions on both sides, and reports coming out later that these were "blowback". Ever read Chalmers Johnson's "Blowback"?
