I am sorry, that is silly. We subjugated Germany and Japan to our will precisely by dictating the kind of constitutions they would have post- War.

You seem to presume that most Vietnamese were Communist. There is no evidence of that. There is evidence that sometimes, by hiding their true character, the Vietcong won political support in sections of the country, which is rather different. In any event, I do not consider the attempt to form a stable government that would evolve into a true liberal democracy, including civil liberties, subjugation. I do not consider that desperate people subjected to both propaganda and brutal repression for cooperating with Americans and RVN forces are making a free choice, nor that, in any case, it makes sense for them to choose a totalitarian dictatorship that will allow no turning back. I think that when people experience freedom and responsible government, they see their advantages.

There were plenty of ideological hostile people in Japan and Germany during our occupation of them, and some resistance. In the end, though, it did not matter, most people wanted to get on with their lives. That is the situation I think we are in in Iraq, that most people will bet on us if we do not falter, and will help us pacify the country in order to get on with their lives.........
