The nature of Sun's Opteron announcement does give you that "thrown together at the last minute feeling." Our best sources indicate Sun had no intention of signing a deal of this size with AMD as little as two months back.

But you know this is untrue roomie, because we were discussing this partnership ad nauseum right here on this thread in the summer. The only issue was what were the products going to be, and how they were positioned.

As far as the "deal of this size" issue, the Solaris port, which was announced in September on CNET pretty much tells you the deal was of some significance to Sun. And we were talking about it before then.
