I just finished reading a book about Islam, so I feel like I'm an expert... -g. Islam really stopped being "ethnic" as soon as its proponents had an opportunity to start expanding their domain, which was almost right away. Any person in the newly conquered lands could accept Islam, and immediately become equal with any other Muslim, at least in theory. In real life, there were some tensions, because Arabs would still consider themselves superior. Jews, OTOH, were always an ethnic group, not only religious. Nazis were far from being the only ones who checked the "concentration" of "Jewish blood". One famous example is Karl Marx. He was brought up as a Christian, but what anti-Semite ever failed to pin Marxism on the Jews?
