Dean is conning his followers. He cannot beat Bush and knows it. He knows he can't win a single southern or border state even he's running with Merle Haggard. Therefore, he's putting himself above the cause.

Same thing Nader did in 2000. He knew he might help Bush get elected but didn't care. He was arrogant and deluded. He still doesn't admit this though. These politicians all have big egos, Dean included. It seems all they care about is themselves. Actually Gore is the one who didn't put himself above everyone else. He was a good sport. But now we may need him back. If so, he'll have earned the right to be president.
