The origins of modern Islamicism are among groups like the Muslim Brotherhood, in Egypt, and the Ayatollah Khomeini and his followers in Iran. There were others, although I do not have an exhaustive catalogue ready to hand. They were mainly Middle Eastern and amalgamated fundamentalism and Western ideological influences. They also took the lead role organizationally within world Islam, as Al Qaeda is today. True, there were and would have been indigenous conflicts within the Muslim world in Southeast Asia without these influences, but the main intellectual, financial, and organizational support of Islamicism has been from the Middle East..........
