This is a long and complex subject (why Jews were treated as an ethnicity), but it doesn't change the fact that it is a religion. No, it doesn't. OTOH, if a group is treated as an ethnicity, and if it identifies itself as one, isn't it likely to acquire attributes of actually being one? (I am sort of not certain, are we arguing, or agreeing? --g). Given the differences between, for example, the European Jews and the Black African Jews, it would be probably correct to say that Jews are not a single ethnic group. BTW, many years ago I read a book by Arthur Koestler - "The Thirteenth Tribe", I believe, where he is making a fairly impressive argument to the effect that the majority of European Jews are actually descendents from the Khazars. The Khazar Kingdom, or Kaganate, was a mighty Empire, on par with Byzantium, which existed for several centuries (in the region of the modern "stans"), and was predominantly Judaic. "Ethnically" or, genetically - Khazars had very little in common with the European descendents from the Biblical Israel, who, according to Koestler's research, were practically wiped out during the Crusades.
