A group of - let's call them squatters - settles an area which was, in practical terms, a desert

Half a million or so people lived there, and most of them were farmers. You have yet to acknowledge that.

nothing short of an economic miracle

Built on billions of dollars in public and private aid. Per capita, Israel is the most assisted nation on earth, by an extraordinary margin. Something worth remembering. All the talk about how everybody is against the poor Israelis needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

The only “fair” solution I could see would be to create a geographically contiguous Palestinian State, roughly the same size as the Jewish State, and transfer the populations. Security of both entities would have to be guaranteed, probably with a UN-controlled DMZ-style buffer zone and a large US presence.

It won’t happen.
