Clark can still compete for the nomination if Kerry slips.
But I'm convinced if Dean is the frontrunner by February and Clark doesn't look like he can overwhelm him then Gore will be urged to step in and cut through the BS. He would be the instant dominant figure and at least all non-Dean supporters would endorse him. Gore-Clark would beat Bush.
