3Com protects wireless investment by integrating all WiFi standards into one solution

ISSUED BY: HOWARD MELLET COMMUNICATIONS

[Johannesburg, 28 November 2003] - In a step that further strengthens the company's push into the enterprise wireless space, 3Com has released the new tri-mode wireless LAN access points and clients adapters that combine advanced wireless security with integrated products supporting all WiFi standards - 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g.

As WiFi standards and products evolve, enterprises face the challenge of continuously migrating to the latest technologies while simultaneously protecting existing investments.

According to Yankee Group's Business WLAN Survey 2003, only 50% of WLAN-enabled organisations were very or somewhat satisfied with the ability to upgrade their wireless LANs. "3Com's new products address this issue by integrating the three WiFi standards into a single platform," comments Sarah Kim, analyst at the Yankee Group.

Migrating to a tri-mode wireless LAN option will give South African companies - using different standards-based wireless PC cards and PCI adapters - reliable access at multiple speeds and frequencies all on the same network.

"At 3Com, we're now creating opportunities for SA users to take advantage of the benefits of all three wireless standards, therefore preserving IT investments and providing a clear path to future upgrades," comments Wolfgang Held, network consultant at 3Com SA.

The tri-mode wireless LAN access points and client adapters also feature the latest advancements in security such as WPA (WiFi Protected Access), AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) and 802.1x.

"The integration of these WiFi standards now provides a number of industries with a practical solution for utilising wireless LANs' many benefits. For example, businesses' mobile workforces can now securely access business-critical information for fast decision-making and improved customer service," says Held. 3Com is one of only a few vendors that drive down wireless total cost of ownership by offering tri-mode wireless solutions.

By SCOTT THURM, Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

Computer-networking-equipment maker 3Com Corp. said tech-consulting firm Electronic Data Systems Corp. would offer 3Com's products to EDS's corporate clients.

The deal is 3Com's first with a top-tier consulting firm, as the Marlborough, Mass., company attempts to re-establish a presence inside big companies. EDS is the second-largest tech-services firm, behind International Business Machines Corp.

EDS will offer all of 3Com's products, including those produced by a joint venture with China's Huawei Technologies Co. "EDS gives us the reach into the large enterprise that we don't have today," said Mark Slaven, 3Com's chief financial officer. He said 3Com is hoping to strike similar deals with other big tech-services firms. ...
