Actually, I think it just highlights the failure of the first 8 months of war. It's embarrassing that the Prez of the most powerful country in the world has to be moved in secret to a country where major combat is over.

Is there anything triumphant about the PPIC coming out from behind a curtain in the mess hall? What happened to the parade to cheering Iraqis hailing their Liberator?

It makes him look small IMO even though it did bolster the morale of those few (600 I think) who were there. I wonder if the soldiers consider the extraordinary measures for his safety (including his ability to turn around and high tail it back home if he felt threatened) indication of how dangerous their day-to-day lives are.

I cannot imagine the severe stress they are under. On top of the physical danger, the Iraqis appear to be a bottomless pit of needs, wants and increasing impatience. Soldiers who built houses for Iraqis received complaints that they were too small. Geez.

On top of that, what happens if the Iraqis get their national election, vote in a Shiite cleric and a theocracy? Democracy does not guarantee that Iraq will look like the US. Democracy does not guarantee a liberal social order.
