IRAQ NEWS: U.S. Soldier Killed in Iraq Mortar Attack story.news.yahoo.com Filed: 42 minutes ago MOSUL, Iraq (Reuters) - A U.S. soldier was killed in a mortar attack on a U.S. military base in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul on Friday, a U.S. military spokesman said. The spokesman said the mortar bomb hit the headquarters of the 101st Airborne Division in one of former dictator Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s palaces. One Iraqi working at the base received minor injuries. Mosul, in the far north of Iraq (news - web sites), has seen a surge in violence in recent weeks. Earlier this week, two soldiers from the 101st Airborne were shot by attackers while stuck in traffic in the center of the city. Their civilian vehicle was then smashed by a crowd of angry young men who attempted to burn it. Since Washington declared major combat in Iraq over on May 1, 185 U.S. soldiers have died in action in the country amid a deepening guerrilla insurgency. "Quagmire Accomplished!"

Bushies use their power to get rich, enrich cronies and payback contributors. Absolutely. And the most disgusting part of it is that many of those profits being doled out are on the backs of the environment and the rush to war. When Bush was in Washington State talking jobs, he mentioned one way to create more jobs, cutting down more forests. That in the state where Microsoft has been the growth driver, not timber harvesting. However the timber cmpanies give Bush $$$ not high-tech. So we vcut down more trees and shp our good high-tech jobs to India. That's fine with Bush. When you look at the core money behind Bush-Cheney, it all started with oil-gas, Texas cronies and Bectel. Those as well as the defense contractors are the ones making oodles in Iraq, sometimes with high-priced, no-bid contracts gouging the tax-payer. The Medicare bill was another windfall for Bush contributors. The government is not allowed to negotiate down the price of prescription drugs. That alone is a budget-buster. And the HMO's get 12 billion cash to "expand into rural areas so they can compete". The entire Bush-Cheney team will no doubt leave office and reap the windfalls themselves. Already they are making their friends like James Baker super-rich, but soon they join the party themselves. Only Ken Lay is missing from the feast at the public troughs. John Kerry is trying to institute a new law which makes them wait 5 years to reap their rewards after leaving office. Now that is a man fighting for the tax-payers. Often these politicians are completely compromised by huge $$$ private sector offers waiting for them in a year or two.
