Btw, I also think it was a nice gesture to visit the troops. But to believe that it was not also politically motived is pretty naive, IMHO.

Of course it was politically motivated. It was a political statement to the troops, the American people and, importantly, the Iraqi people. Absolutely brilliant move.

Plus, it's driving the Bush-haters nuts, which is an entertainment bonus for us. Ray-man, for example, is so beside himself with anger, he's about to have two strokes. ;-)

there are few things politicians do
which are unrelated to politics.

What do you think Hillary was doing
out there?

Still, the President did not have to go
to Iraq for a photo opp.

Of course there was political hay to be made
for his having gone, but to dismiss it
out of hand as mere PR is just as naive
as suggesting the trip had nothing to do with politics.

I would say the same: PR, PR, PR, ...

Clinton went to Macedonia, Nixon went to Vietnam, LBJ went to Vietnam, Bush went to Afghanistan and Iraq. This is what Presidents do. Do they use these trips as photo ops? Of course, Clinton did as have the rest. Why not? Who wouldn't? The point is to support the troops by meeting with them. These trips, however brief, give encouragement to those on the firing line. In GWB's case, it also allowed a brief meeting with some of the Iraqi Council. It is a pity that the anti-GWB crowd can't get past their hate even when the President is trying to do something for the troops.

Of course it was PR. But what you can never understand is that it was much more than that.

Petty lefties gnashing their teeth are a dime a dozen.
