Please...
The GOP did not 'start out' saying Iraqi oil would pay for the cost of the war. The potential use of oil to offset the war costs was given in response to myopic leftists who, despite that their own countrymen were murdered by the thousands, cited financial costs as an argument against holding the Iraqi dictator to his worldwide obligations.

I believe that you are jousting with the aggressively ignorant. No matter what you tell them about Saddam and 911, they'll fight like hell to remain totally ignorant. Wolfowitz, Cheney, the PPIC have all backtracked on this although Shrubbery still forgets from time-to-time.

The law of unintended consequences still goes on. OBL must be thoroughly delighted with the turn of events prompted by the PPIC et al. To wit:

- Saddam, secular despot, out of power
- Turkey, secular democracy, may become destabilized
- Rift between Brits/US and Western Europe
- Rift between Brits/US and UN
- US pulls troops or intends to pull troops from SA in favor of concentration in Iraq --- OBL very pleased about this point in particular
- War on terrorism further destabilizies Saud family hold on SA street
- Programs like Iron Hammer likely to create a new generation of radicalized extremists.
- Iraq becomes new meeting place for extremists
- Focus on Iraq allows Afghanistan to fall back into chaos. Taliban regrouping.
- General destabilization of the region creates opportunities for radical groups to gain power.

OBL couldn't have asked for better support than the PPIC.
