U.S. jobless claims fall to nearly a 3-year low By Corbett B. Daly
8:30am 11/26/03
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- The number of U.S. workers filing for unemployment benefits over the past four weeks fell to a nearly 3-year low, the Labor Department said Thursday. The four-week average of initial claims for state benefits dropped by 10,000 to stand at 358,750 in the week ended Nov. 22, the department said. That's the lowest since the week ended Feb. 10, 2001. The four-week average is considered a better barometer of labor market conditions because the weekly new-claims number is subject to significant revisions and statistical quirks. The number of new claims in the most recent week fell by 11,000 to 351,000, down from a revised 362,000. That's the lowest since the week ended Jan. 20, 2001.
