I think John Adams did not know of divorces at that time. Did not know of adultery etc. But our society has changed to meet the demands of time and even though the church defines marriage the way it is defined, it does not recognize divorce to that degree. There is a line of distinction between how the court interprets marriage and how the church does it. It is the court that decides on divorce and distribution of joint assets. I mean two brothers or two sisters can fight over joint assets when they decide to separate.
