Bush was AWOL from duty for 13 months in 1972, not just AWOL but that's technically desertion. He evaded a mandatory drug test which had just been instituted and disappeared to Alabama. There he was rumored to have a cocaine bust hushed up by the family and was supposed to be working on some political campaign. He was required to report that year but never did. Perhaps the reason is that the war was almost over and his number was coming up to go to Nam. He figured just disappear for a year and no problem.

The proof of Bush's AWOL status is not just that he had some cronies cleanse his military records in 1998, but the fact that a multi-thousand dollar reward has been available for three years now to anyone who witnessed Bush reporting for duty during that time period. No takers.

awolbush.com has all the info, pro and con, regarding Bush's (lack of a) military career
