TECHNOLOGY Margolies gets everyone's attention when he suggests a pseudo-China play: "I'll give you my favorite Chinese stock: 3Com."This is a U.S. networking equipment company, the coulda-been Cisco. Margolies says: "It has a lot of cash on the balance sheet [$1.5 billion], very little debt, and they realized that they'd lost the battle with Cisco, but they did have a lot of valuable assets." To Margolies these are distribution, brand name, market presence and a huge patent portfolio. So 3Com is teaming up with the leading Chinese networking company, Huawei. "Of all my technology stocks, it's really the only one that I've added in the last one to two months," Margolies says. "You're not paying that much above cash"--the market cap is $2.7 billion--"for what could be one of the larger networking companies down the road."
