I am not sure.

I made a purchase from amazon a couple weeks ago, no tax.

I bought some skis from an individual on ebay.. no tax provided that I didn't live in the same state as he did.

I bought some ski boots from a Canadian retailer selling their inventory on ebay.. also, no tax.

Some states are supposedly requiring that you report such purchases w/ your tax filing. Here is the ordeal w/ the state of Maine: centralmaine.com

A CPA in North Carolina recommends that clients keep track of their purchases and report them when filing.. otherwise the state will be using a standard formula for determining what you owe: wral.com

I have not used dell.. here is there policy: Unless Customer provides Dell with a valid and correct tax exemption certificate applicable to the product ship-to location prior to Dell's acceptance of the order, the Customer is responsible for sales and all other taxes associated with the order, except for Dell's franchise taxes and taxes on Dell's net income. If applicable, a separate charge for taxes will be shown on the invoice.
