For anyone with cable or satellite who can get BBC World, it is consistently excellent and relatively unbiased when it comes to world affairs (unless the viewer is one who thinks every media outlet should reflect his personal agenda - the average Fox viewer, in other words).

you have to tune in PBS to get any real news.

I beg to differ. The News Hour with Jim Lehrer is very much in the maw of right wing corporate funders like the Annenberg Foundation and Archer, Daniels, Midland. The flavor of their coverage is distinctly biased toward open propaganda for the government. I did a casual survey during the debate leading up to the illegal invasion of Iraq in March. In no instance was there ever a strong opponent to the war allowed to enter into the debates. In no instance was anyone who was openly questioning the veracity of the absurd charges that Colin Powell made at the UNSC on February 5th allowed to speak. The debate seemed to range from those who mildly supported the war to those who were foaming at the mouth.

More recently, in the discussion of the Medicare bill, there was absolutely no mention of the unique way that the bill passed in the House, with a 15 minute roll call held open for 3 hours as the GHP leadership strong-armed two members of their caucus with threats of purges from the House. Nor was there any intelligent discussion of the "trojan horse" aspects of the bill, the strategy of deceit that the Bushies are using, the fact that the bill is yet another bait and switch effort, the fact that William Novelli, the CEO of AARP is a neo-conservative with ties to Newt Gingrich, the fact that AARP stood to gain financially from its lucrative insurance and drug businesses.

In short, the News Hour is just another piece of Republican propaganda. Dressed up in a more sober package than the trashy Faux News offerings.

To be fair, I will append the results of a recent poll showing that PBS/NPR audiences tend to be less ill-informed than the Faux News congregation.

See page 15 for data on "Frequencies of Misperceptions".

I would say that PBS viewers who regularly tune in to Bill Moyer's NOW program are significantly less likely to hold misperceptions than those who rely strictly on the News Hour. Furthermore many Bill Moyer's NOW viewers are also much better educated and informed because we attend regularly to the real news from sources like the Internet and Pacifica Radio. Particularly Democracy NOW!, one of the best news programs in the nation today:
