Separation of Church and State. It's good for the Church. It's good for the State.

We would not want a State run by the Church. Because in a pluralistic society, one which we have the freedom to worship, or not to, as our free choice, if the Church was the State, and worship was compulsory or expected for advancement, then this freedom would be lost.

Nor would we want a Church run by the State, where the type of religion and the type of worship would be dictated by the State.

The worst examples of governments around the world are those governments that have not heeded the wisdom of Jefferson. In Russia, religion was outlawed by the State. In Iran the Church rules the State. In both cases the people have less freedom and suffer the tyranny caused by lack of separation of Church and State.

When Jefferson said there should be a wall of separation between Church and State, he aptly meant that the wall should be there so that the State may not interfere in the workings of the Church, and so that the Church may not interfere in the workings of the State.

This must be the way of a free people. So that the Church must stand unaltered by the State, and that the State stand unaltered by the Church.

In this way, and in only this way can both institutions support each other with respect and dignity.

Freedom of religion is a wonderful thing. And so too is freedom from religion.
