I think we agree on that -- we are a largely oil-based economy and the middle east has true strategic importance to us. We should be trying harder to reduce that dependence, but no matter what we do we are stuck with this reality for some time to come. Unfortunately, our presence in the middle east does not seem to bring peace and stability, it brings guerilla war and runs the risk of the more western-friendly regimes being toppled by "radicals", and it fosters the uprising of ideologies that many feel are a threat to us and to the region. A large US military presence in the middle east shows little sign of bringing peace and security to the region, and indeed shows more signs of being part of the problem rather than part of the solution.
