I am glad that I will never have to make such a decision but given the choice between the atom bomb and an invasion of the Japanese mainland costing thousands of US lives- I would drop the bomb. mike

Those were not the only alternatives at the time. If they were, I would agree with you.

Hi Mike,

Re: but given the choice between the atom bomb and an invasion of the Japanese mainland costing thousands of US lives- I would drop the bomb

The logic fallacy I see here is the presentation of a false dichotomy. There were several other policy options to be considered as well. One of the most humane would have been to drop the atomic devices on more clearly military targets.

It is impossible today to reconstruct the what-ifs of Japan's intent to surrender. It is my belief that the Japanese were closer to surrender prior to August 6 than the American public has been led to believe. YMMV. :)

Was going through some old family photographs today that I'd never seen before. Found one taken on Guam, August 16, 1945. My Dad and eight other young Navy guys, seated in a semi-circle, getting started on the first round of drinks at their VJ celebration. That is one happy party!
