There were several other policy options to be considered as well. One of the most humane would have been to drop the atomic devices on more clearly military targets. It is impossible today to reconstruct the what-ifs of Japan's intent to surrender. It is my belief that the Japanese were closer to surrender prior to August 6 than the American public has been led to believe. YMMV. :)
