"1X benefits, if there are any, accrue to the carrier only. Clients don't know the difference in air interfaces and likely never will ... 1x is no more 3g than GPRS."

Verizon is widely predicted to gain the most subscribers with number portability (not oblivious to TMobile's ability to attract teenagers who just won't shut up or pay any kind of respectable ARPU) not because they are cheaper. I like to think Get-It-Now has something to do with it or 1X/DO. But, all indications are its due to coverage.

Why should I abandon Verizon for WiMax? Expecting a rebirth in the PDA market?

Most carriers are now cutting capex to try and survive and they await a better grid of services to be offered, at much lower costs.

Good point. But, why do you believe WiMax is cheaper? You haven't proven coverage using existing sites or a picocell that doesn't require access to a bundle of T1's or an outdoor antenna.

You are expecting providers to abandon current network and spectrum below PCS/1.8ghz just to offer data at speeds no one is seriously demanding and coverage no right-minded person would pay even equal money for.

"In your world, 2g and a Blackberry are good enough."

Eeew... Do you have any idea how bulky and expensive a Blackberry is?
