Re: Hong Kong, they never had a choice, and they mostly speak Cantonese with a bit of Hakka thrown in. Mandarin was always taught in the schools, and even by 1995 you could get around quite comfortably with it. Outside of Taipei, Mandarin is almost useless. The Chinese in Singapore and mostly from Suzhou; indeed, much of the FDI in Suzhou (a beautiful place, btw, for a Chinese city) is still from Singapore. Suzhou is known as the home of the purest Mandarin in China. Li Kwan-yu seems to clearly tilt toward Beijing on the Taiwan issue (being the neoauthoritarian poster child makes him popular in Beijing as well).

Taiwan has no advantage in air combat. They have pretty planes; they will be unable to generate sorties. When they hit the 50% attrition rate, they will focus on force preservation. The recent DoD report to Congress on the Chinese military is quite revealing on this topic.
