Now, after down-sizing they will go through a period of profits before they get to hiring these people again.

That is what the WH is hoping for but it is not anywhere near a sure thing. That is why I laugh when the republicans on these political board announced "game over" on the economy issue when the 7% GDP came out. The problem is that there are no good jobs now, what is going to happen when we go back to a more reasonable GDP?

The examples you cite, as well as your geographic area, southern california is one of the few recipients of Bush spending. In this case military. Hollywood has also done well. But other industries where professionals work... not just technology although tech was something of a promised land for professionals and it has disintegrated as far as jobs are concerned... but brokerage, high end retail management, advertising, tourism, Medicine (except pharmaceuticals) etc. are all shadows of their former selves as far as jobs growth is concerned. This has been going on for 3 years and Bush is in some kind of denial about it.
