If anything, it's an understatement. I am referring to the whole of Africa, not just SA.

> You have made other comments regarding life in SA and it is hard for me to imagine how you deal with it. There must be something there that makes it all worth it...or are you just very good at making the best of a bad situation?

I suppose it's like the curate's egg --- good and bad in parts! However, it's always easier to talk about the bad because one takes the good for granted.

On one hand, there are some very serious problems which do bode very badly for the future. I can mention massive unemployment, the highest HIV/AIDS infection rate in the world, unacceptable crime rate and an incompetent, but arrogant, bureaucracy which is virtually impossible to deal with.

And on the other hand, SA still has the highest standard of living in Africa, the remnants of a first-world infrastructure, access to "anything" you can think about, a very pleasant climate, a reasonable cost-of-living, readily available domestic help and one of the best life-styles for middle-class people anywhere in the world. An added bonus for me is that all my kids and grandchildren are here.
