Thanks, Sam. Good observation about the winner-take-all dynamics in the disk drive supply chain. Further supporting this point: Seagate's enterprise division (50%-60% share, was 80% at one point), Hitachi/IBM mobile drive division (50%-60% share, slippery slope), Hutchinson vs Innovex, and Intevac vs Anelva (NEC).

I seem to recall that Seagate assembled most of the patents covering different aspects of fluid-bearing dynamic motor technology before it entered into strategic alliances with both Nidec and Minebea in the late 90s. Would you know if it still gets a piece of every motor sold?
