Ahhh... I was basing my assumptions on something else. An assumption that all creations have rights. A river has the right to remain unpoluted from the neglect or deliberate malice of its keepers. A tree has the right to remain free of contamination and degradation caused by neglect or deliberate disregard for its flourishing health. That does not mean that we can't dam up the river or cut down the tree. However, it means we should maintain responsibility for keeping the environment in a clean and healthy condition as we determine to manage these resources.

Regarding the 'interests' of animals. I doubt that animals carry much of a conscious interest in the future beyond the instinctive behavior that guides self preservation. I doubt that an animal experiences any conscious regret that its life may be cut short as a meal.

"Any person with any sort of sensitivity (if they be honest) will admit that animals exhibit a range of emotions and of thought..."

Yes. It is immoral to deliberately put an animal into a fear situation or position of suffering unnecessarily. Although the greatest wrong is done to your own soul, you may also be creating a source of disease (in the meat) via the chemicals released during the killing of the beast.

So where rights of animals, trees, rivers are concerned there is always an interloping responsibility of humans. We don't hold the river responsible for a lamb not getting fed, we hold its human keeper responsible.
