”You seem to be saying that the right of a river is the obligation of a person. A river does not have consciousness, does it? So are you talking about the supposed rights of insentient matter??? or are you talking about the supposed obligations of humans to rocks, mud, and water???”

It goes back to the earlier statement that I made.

"All of creation, in part and as a package, has the right to responsible and careful treatment where and when placed in the hands of human beings"

There is no sentience on the part of the river what so ever. This might help you to understand my assumptions regarding animal rights as well. It really is beside the point that the animal suffers or dies. The distinguishing issue is on the part of the human being to abuse, corrupt, pollute, neglect, or behave with any malicious disregard.

I can see how the "soul" comment would throw you but I would not be completely honest if I were to leave it out.

"So are you talking about the supposed rights of insentient matter??? or are you talking about the supposed obligations of humans to rocks, mud, and water???"

The Celts believed that rivers, trees and mountains all had spirits and while they were not ascribed rights their approach to terra-forming was different because these things were sacred.

"What are you talking about? Has any university or medical facility ever recognized a "soul"? If you get cancer do we operate on your "soul"??"

G.K. Chesterton said "You can free things from alien or accidental laws, but not from the laws of their own nature.... Do not go about...encouraging triangles to break out of the prison of their three sides. If a triangle breaks out of its three sides, its life comes to a lamentable end."
