For years they were in the forefront of communication technology, and many Hams, like you, built or put together their own equipment. At great expense! It's true what you say but, unfortunately, technology moved on. The heydays of ham radio were the days of the vacuum tube (valve) and all the old WWII surplus military equipment. After transistors and microchips came in, and especially the digital technology, it became impossible to build one's own equipment. I have been a ham for 25 years and a "check-book" one at that. I seldom built anything except except for antennas, keyers, antenna tuners and other small things. I don't know if you know Tom Drake of Tentorio Research. He sometimes drops in here to say hello but not for a long time now. He's actually a gold fundi and runs an advisory service. His father was the Drake of Drake radio which was one of the original and most popular ham radios in the 50s and 60s. The time of AM just before SSB became popular and just before the Japs took the market. > There is a guy broadcasting from Spain I think it is, or maybe Portugal, speaks english well, but has a huge booming signal that everybody wants to contact. You probably know him. I think he radiates 2KW, lives on a hill with a massive antenna. Yes, you are correct. He is EA3OT (echo alpha three old timer) from Barcelona, name of Mike, an engineer by profession. Everyone knows him. He saw to that.lists.contesting.com > But there is one common trait......they all know how to B.S. Methinks you have the makings of an excellent ham --- come to think of it, maybe you are one already and are having me on?!
