re Pakistan - one thing to keep in perspective is that (with 1 exception - Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan aka 'Frontier Gandhi), no one has ever been able to control the North West Frontier Province, excepting the local leaders. Over centuries, people have tried and failed.

That region borders Afghanistan, which is why we hear of thugs crossing back and forth with impunity.

Specifically - one can not blame President Musharraf for not being able to control that region - it has almost never been done.
