Troop readiness is not a dumb argument, that's an absurd statement. We are in the middle of at least one war and several 'peacekeeping' or 'peacelosing' missions.

No one seems to dispute the argument that our troops on the ground are stretched too thinly. In addition, 1/3rd of the forces in Iraq are not regular army and approximately 50% of Reservists there do not want to sign up for another tour.

We have no draft and I have not heard about any big rush of young men and women signing up to enlist. Aside from compassion fatigue and daily stress, our soldiers are simply going to get tired. Are you going to volunteer to replace them?
