An interesting amalgamation of ideas... (some of which I disagree with quite a lot).

Is an idea I'm conversant with. IMO, two of the most fundamental poles, pulling to influence the American character, and with us since before our nation officially began, are the Puritanical pole and the Libertarian (oft called "Jeffersonian") pole. Somewhere in that conflict, you can find Americans.

As to "the principled bookish America of the Constitution" being "no longer mainstream America, being a 'marginal America'"; were that truly so, were the game of Democracy and individual rights actually up --- I would no longer recognize my country.
