I propose a toast ...

... to QUALCOMM's GSM1x!

<< It will have to get to the point that all CDMA phones sold in China are 1X and all 1X phones have GSM >>

It would appear so.

This is really potentially VERY significant, both for Qualcomm's China Unicom potential which appears to now be multiplied considerably on the medium short, medium term, and long term, but also for the potential implementation of GSM1x elsewhere.

One thing this does, I would think, is solidify Unicom's 3G migration path.

One potential Unicom migration scenario that was in play, was that after 3G license award of 2.1 GHz spectrum they might elect to use CDMA2000 and/or IS-856 (1xEV-DO) for their 3G CDMA network and 3GSM WCDMA and possibly 3GSM TD-SCDMA for their GSM network migration.

While I never saw that as probable, it would appear that this GSM1x decision takes that possible scenario off the table, but in China one never knows.

We don't have a lot of detail yet, but I would have to say that this is the best bleeping news all day that relates to any company I am currently invested in.

I can't say more because NO CHEERLEADING is allowed here by Herr Su, but this one deserves a toast, so I would like to propose one.
