When society is confronted with large tasks, it uses large organizations, either government agencies or corporations, to accomplish those tasks. We did depend on bureaucrats to take us to the moon because individuals by themselves could not accomplish such a large task. Without the National Park Service, there would be no national parks. Without companies such as Boeing, there would be no commercial aircraft. Without the Defense Department, there would be no military. I could go on and on. The point is we do need bureauacracies.

I believe you could break the fault lines in our society (present since our founding, as you pointed out) down onto two axis:

Authoritarian - Libertarian
(Strong, controlling central government vs. individual and state's rights.)

Puritanical - Tolerant
(Using the power of government to enforce on the entire society rules of behavior derived from one's particular religious beliefs vs. resistance to the Theocratic impulse.)

Ah yes - the virtues of social isolation, every man for himself, thus every man powerless. I knew I could count on you for regurgitating the very propaganda that the article was denouncing.
