Straight from the horse's mouth:Last Update: 04/12/2003 10:34 Israelis nabbed in Brazil, S. Africa for organ trafficking By Haaretz Service and Agencies Four Israelis were arrested in Brazil and South Africa on suspicions of involvement in an international organ-trafficking ring, Israel Radio reported on Thursday. The two Israelis nabbed in Brazil allegedly headed the ring, managing to convince 30 individuals in the northeastern region of the country to sell one of their kidneys for $6,000 to $10,000. The paid donors would then undergo medical checks after which they would be flown to South Africa where the implants would be carried out, according to a police spokesman in the northeastern city of Recife. Recife's police chief said early Thursday that nine Brazilian citizens, including a police captain, were also arrested in the course of the investigation and that the inquiry was ongoing. The names of the Israelis held in Brazil were not published. If convicted in Brazil, the two could face prison sentences of up to 15 years. Two other Israelis were arrested in the city of Durban in South Africa in connection with the organ trafficking ring. One of the Israelis, who served as a liaison in the kidney transplant operation, was named as Meir Shushan. The second Israeli, who received one of the kidneys, was named as Aganya Robel. The two were brought before a magistrate in Durban, and their passports were confiscated ahead of the continuation of legal proceedings against them. They are scheduled to face charges in court on February 10 of contravening South Africa's Human Tissue Act that outlaws trade of this kind, said police superintendent Mary Martins-Engelbrecht.haaretzdaily.com
