They do not have to attack Mecca and Medina where their holiest shrines are. Ok.. that's better.. But have you thought about the repercussions of bringing down one leg of the Saudi power structure, while leaving the other intact (the holy cities)? The Saudis control the wealth, the military, and possess the political authority to suppress militant activities within their society, especially since the "faustian bargain" has been violated by the Islamo-Fascist militants who are conducting terrorism within SA. All they needed, apparently, was a bit of "motivation", which I believe the presence of US forces on their border has provided. Attacking a secular state such as Iraq is one thing. But having Americans going after the Wahhabist clerics within the holy sites and ousting them from power would create an uproar throughout the Islamic world. And you think Bush is being reckless?what I said was the US should cooperate with the SA royals not the other way about as you indicated. Give the SA royal family time to deal with their citizens. No.. we tried that approach, remember? It didn't work. We received no cooperation with regard to financial transactions that supported terrorism through "charities", nor any real support with regard to quashing militants within Afghanistan and Pakistan.. The Saudis are the ultimate machiavellians. They act like your friends so long as it suits them and maintains them in power. But they will do whatever is required, including supporting terrorists against the US if they sense the Americans lack resolve. Bottom line, they don't care what side they are on, so long as it's the winning one and preserves their rule over the Arabian peninsula. The US wanted the US justice imposed of the perpetrators. Not as I recall the incident. What we wanted was the intelligence as to who put them up to that attack. And the Saudis killed them before they could be pumped for information (or the information they might have given already was never relayed to the US). The Saudis need to understand that they are in power only because the US has desired stability in the region, even if it was at the cost of democratic reforms and economic diversity.. But we're not about to continue providing that support without being show credible and concrete actions by the Saudis showing they have stopped permitting the spreading of hate and racism via their religious beliefs.
