BUSH LIES DEPT. -- Latest on the Air Force One Tall Tale

AS WHITE HOUSE CHANGES STORY, BRITISH AIRWAYS REFUTES BUSH STORY OF PILOT
SIGHTING

In his trip to Baghdad, President Bush said he would have immediately turned
around had his cover been blown. In trying to play up the secrecy and
dangerous nature of the trip, Bush's aides said that a British Airways pilot
spotted the president's plane, radioing, "Did I just see Air Force One?" The
White House said Air Force One responded: "Gulfstream 5" - a code word to
disguise the plane - and the British Airways pilot "seemed to sense he was
in on a secret and replied 'Oh.'"

But now it appears the story was a complete fabrication, designed only to
hype the story. According to Reuters, "British Airways said yesterday that
none of its pilots made contact with President Bush's plane during its
secret flight to Baghdad on Thanksgiving, contradicting White House reports
of a midair exchange that nearly prompted Bush to call off his trip."

Making things worse, the White House revised its story after revelations of
the distortion.
The White House now says "it had left the wrong impression"
and that actually the conversation took place between Air Force One and the
airport tower in London. But again, British Airways refuted this tale, with
a spokesman for the company telling media "that none of its pilots has come
forward to acknowledge either making or overhearing the purported
conversation."

No, Dean has not yet shown signs of attracting much more than the anti-war left, angry outsider vote and northeast liberals. You smply cannot put much impotance on New Hampshire except as it relates to Kerry.

The moderates are who decides elections and as good as Dean is in attracting liberals, he will have ongoing trouble making centrists trust him with the nomination. Also, remember that Clark entered the race to block Dean, not help him. Dean-Clark would only emerge if they run #1 and #2 with more than 50% and agree to team up. That would only happen IMHO if Gore refuses to step in. But why would be refuse? The nomination would be a gift. Gore would also likely get the AFL-CIO endorsement right away.

Gore's stature is so much higher than Dean's that Gore would immediately unite the party around him if he were step into a divided race. Plus he's really a sentimental favorite. Gore can also harness the angry voter versus Bush. After all, who has more reason to be angry than Gore himself? He was cheated in 2000, but has been a very good sport about it and shown class.

You forget there are no winner take all states in the Dem primaries and 37% of delegates are held by party leaders and officials. Even if Dean were to win half the primaries by pluralities over the other 8 candidates, the other 8 (and especially the top 5) will still control roughly two-thirds of the delegates.

Dean is like Bill Bradley in 1999 except that instead of one Al Gore he's running against five of them. I would expect the five to unite in the end against Dean.
Dean has already pledged to vigorously support whomever the nominee may be. The best compromise candidate would be Al Gore. I believe he would beat GW Bush. I believe Dean cannot.
